Miniature Carousel Builders Corner
This month's example of beautiful carousel art was constructed by
Charles Gerstenberger and painted by his wife, Ruth, of Ohio. The
Gerstenbergers are members of the Miniature Carrousel Builders
organization and their carousel was displayed in the MCB Exhibit at the
Valley Mall, Hagerstown, MD in the summer of 2002 . These photos were
taken at that time.
This carousel was built in 1998 and was under construction for 14
months. This is the first of two carousels built by Charles.
THE DETAILS:
- Base: 3l" x 31"
- Carousel: 37" Diameter, 24" Height
- Eight sweeps, three rows
- Brass rope posts
This Carnival Type Carousel was hand-made except for the ceramic
animals. The two outside rows of *"jumpers" are operated by over-head
cranks. Featured is a menagerie of 24 animals, two hand-made chariots
and 150 lights. Charles' wife, Ruth, painted the animals, and designed
the rounding board which includes beaded mirrors. Also, Ruth made the
cloth covered top, and some of the clothes for the people riding the
animals. The riders include Miniature Cabbage Patch Dolls. The picture
board features a photograph of a dog formerly owned by the
Gerstenbergers, as well as postcards.
The Gertstenbergers have displayed their carousels in Local and National
Farm Toy Shows throughout Ohio.
*Jumpers are animals that go up and down.
