Miniature Carousel Builders Corner

This month we are presenting a beautiful miniature carousel built in 2003 by John Ridinger of Pennsylvania. John is a charter member of the Miniature Carousel Builders and is currently working on his sixth carousel.

John and his wife, Betty, have many talents and faithfully entertain guests at exhibits and nursing homes. Authentically dressed, John (Jay-Jay the clown) gives away balloon art, (flowers and animals) with "George" the monkey puppet. Betty made her (Weeze) clown costume and together they bring much joy to the young and old.

THE DETAILS:

  • Base: 28" Diameter
  • Carousel: 26" Diameter; 30" Height
  • Twelve sweeps, three rows
  • Type: Overhead Crank
  • Lights: 260 clear and colored
  • Original Design

Cut out pictures of horses are mounted on 1/8" plywood to decorate the base. This carousel features a menagerie of 32 animals and two chariots. In addition to hand carving the animals, organ, one chariot, and the "bowed" rounding board, John carved some of the doll people, one of which is attired in a wedding dress handmade by Betty. The unique "bowed" rounding board depicts pictures from the trips taken by the Ridingers, (Holy Land, Dollywood, an Ohio River boat, Myrtle Beach, etc.) The inside picture boards feature cherubs and clowns. Betty used trigger cloth to make the striking "dome top." A miniature carousel ornament sits atop the dome.

Also, included in this feature is a picture of John's hand carved replica of the large organ displayed in Knobels Park, Elysburg, PA.

John has displayed and entertained at Chambersburg Mall, Valley Mall, nursing homes in Franklin and Adams Counties , Knobels Park, Hershey Park, and Pen Mar Park.
