Miniature Carousel Builders Corner
This month's beautiful example of miniature carousel art was built by Anthony Mitchell of Maryland. Tony is a charter member of the Miniature Carousel Builders and built six carousels since 1993.
Tony began carving as a young boy and remembers getting excited with each " new pocket knife that came with a pair of high top shoes." His friends Jerry Defenderfer and Walt Kohler (members of MCB) provided the motivation for him to carve carousel animals and build a miniature carousel.
This featured carousel was number four which took about six months to build in 2001. His wife, June painted the animals and decorated the rounding board and mudsill.
THE DETAILS:
- Base: Dodecagon (12-sided) 104"

The dodecagon base is made of walnut and sits on top of an oak square box. The carousel contains 32 hand carved horses, and two chariots make of wood but not hand carved. The outside row horses are standers and the middle and inside rows are jumpers.
The rounding board contains ornaments of clown heads, and post cards of children. Lights surround the mounted post cards. Mirrors are mounted on the top half of the mudsill, and reflector paper covers the lower half which creates an interesting art pattern. A two inch brass ball sits atop the canopy.
The Mitchells have exhibited their carousels at Sandusky Carousel Museum, Ohio, Knobels Park, Pen Mar Park, Dollywood,
Historical Society, Chambersburg Mall, Valley Mall, and senior centers.
