Miniature Carousel Builders Corner

This month's beautiful carousel was constructed by the late Calvin Taylor, formerly of Pennsylvania, and a charter member of the Miniature Carousel Builders. This feature is in memory of Cal and his late wife, Lucille. Their daughter, Sherry, is the current owner of the carousel and has provided the pertinent information.
During his retirement years, Mr. Taylor built the second of his three carousels in 1995, requiring 1½ years of construction time. The carousel was built on a Queen Anne style table, handmade of red oak.
Cal is remembered as a "meticulous perfectionist" in his creations of Queen Anne--Victorian furniture, and his building and restoration of music boxes.
THE DETAILS:

The carousel features 23 porcelain and ceramic menagerie animals. The lower level includes two hand carved chariots, and the upper deck has a single row of animals. Sections of the stairwell to the upper deck were hand carved.

The Nautical theme is reflected thoughout, with both ceilings featuring blue skies, puffy clouds, and seagulls. The rounding board displays ten original paintings from photographs of boats, lighthouses, tall ships and beach scenes, interspersed with gold flake lion-head ornaments. One painting in particular is her father's hand built sailboat at Lake Garda, Verona, Italy.
The periwinkle blue and white vinyl carousel top is capped with a (lighted) lighthouse.
Mr. Taylor exhibited his carousels at the local historical society, and shopping mall.
