Miniature Carousel Builders Corner

Our feature this month is a a unique and interesting carousel built by George Eckenrode, Ohio, a new member of the Miniature Carousel Builders. George and his wife, Arnecia "Arnie" raise Great Danes for show, and attend dog shows throughout the United States. Using their many talents and skills, they decided to build and sell carousels featuring Great Danes. This one is their twelfth and built in 3 weeks. The dogs are painted by Arnie in the six standard colors of the breed.

George is a retired construction worker and his hobby is building, wood carving and sculpting. Among other things he has crafted a canoe, powder horns, sculpture of his son, and a violin. He is now starting on engraving and gunstock carving.

THE DETAILS:
  • Base: 3/4" Height x 13" Diameter
  • Electric Turntable: 2" x 7 1/4" - sets atop base and is enclosed in a hexagon lattice fence.
  • Carousel: 13" Diameter; 18" Height
  • Single row of six dogs
  • Type: Stationery
  • Lights: 36 colored mini-lights
  • Original Design

The construction of this carousel is unique in that the rounding board and canopy are stationery. Both are mounted to the base with brass poles. The platform, turntable and ceiling are independently constructed and revolve. The ceiling is covered with mirrors. The hexagon post, in lieu of a mudsill, holds up the plywood ceiling which is covered with mirrors. The angled construction of the picture board is mounted to the ceiling and features diamond shaped mirrors.

The stationery rounding board is scalloped and decorated with gems, mirrors, and 36 mini-lights. The stationery canopy is covered with cloth trimmed with gold roping and topped with a brass ball. The six hand carved, painted, stationery Great Danes are mounted to the platform with brass poles. A wind-up music box is inside the lattice fence and ribbon/cloth flowers accent the outside of the fence.

The Eckenrodes have exhibited their carousels at wood carving shows, the Toledo Carving Club, and dog shows throughout the United States.
