Miniature Carousel Builders Corner
This month's beautiful example of carousel art was constructed by Andy Lipko of Maryland. Andy and his wife, Rita, have been members of the Miniature Carousel Builders organization for three years. Their carousel was displayed in the MCB Exhibit at the Valley Mall, Hagerstown, MD in the summer of 2002 and these photos were taken at that time.
The carousel was built in 2000 and took one year to complete. Andy has built four carousels and this was his third one.
THE DETAILS:
- Base: 30" round
- Carousel: 27" diameter, 27 1/2 " Height
- Twelve sweeps, three rows
- Type: Overhead Cranks
This carousel was hand-made and 50% of the animals were hand carved by Andy. His wife, Rita, does "some painting," and lends a helping hand when needed. The carousel features a menagerie of 32 animals, two chariots, and 250 lights and jumpers* operated by the overhead cranks. The pictures were collected from tourist centers while traveling on vacations.
Andy has displayed his carousels at the Knights of Columbus, the Mack Truck (UAW) Union Hall and local nursing homes.
*Jumpers are animals that go up and down.
