Old Postcards and History of the Amusement Industry— and a new book signing!
Christopher J. Vaz, the book's author, has spent over two years gathering the material for this book. Raised in the town, and having served on its council and also as borough administrator, Mr. Vaz adds his knowledge of local history and the boardwalk amusements in an enlightening narration on the postcards and photographs that appear in the book.

The book contains 220 vintage postcards from the author's personal collection and photographs contributed by local resident and retired fire chief Leondard Ipri, the Ocean County Historical Society, and the Seaside Heights Volunteer Fire Company Museum.

Arcadia Publishing Company is coming out with this book in 2010 at a most opportune time. In three years (2013), Seaside Heights will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. This year (2010), the Floyd L. Moreland Carousel at Casino Pier is celebrating ITS 100th birthday. (It was brought to Seaside Heights in 1932 from Burlington Island Park-- read about its history in the "About Us" section on the front page of the Magical Carousel Shoppe’s online store at carouselstores.com). Seaside Heights has one of America's most impressive surviving boardwalks, and this book celebrates its growth over the years.

The picture on the cover is of the original building that housed Freeman's Carousel in the early part of the 20th Century. The carousel was the first amusement in the town in 1913, and in the tradition of the old-fashioned “trolley parks,” the local realty company would pay the train fares of people on the weekends to travel to this (then) largely undeveloped barrier island, enjoy the sea breezes, ride the carousel and enjoy the other amusements, and look at the properties that were available for sale.

The book, which is coming out on May 10, 2010, will be available online at the Magical Carousel Shoppe (www.carouselstores.com/magic) under the category “Books and Publications”. It will go online on May 10.

The actual shop will hold a book signing on Sunday, 30 May and Sunday, 4 July 2010 from 1-3 p.m. at 720 Boardwalk in Seaside Heights, just south of Casino Pier. Books ordered online on those days will be signed by the author IF you request “signed by author” in the “comments” section at check-out.

Come to Seaside Heights on May 30 or July 4th 2010 to meet Christopher J. Vaz, to visit the boardwalk, and ride the 100 year old carousel! (Unfortunately, the Wurlitzer band organ is no longer playing). In fact, come visit us ANYTIME--and come back again and again! We’d love to welcome you to our old-fashioned amusement park by the sea!
